WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE BIBLE? MARK 12:29 – 31 KJV

Written by onetruth

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE BIBLE?  MARK 12:29  – 31 KJV

Many Christians believe that faith is the most important thing in the Bible. But it is not – read 1 Corinthians 13: 2 KJV “…..though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity (love), I am nothing.”

Some believe that the greatest thing and most important thing in the Bible is faith but it is not – read 1 Corinthians 13: 13 KJV “And now abideth faith, hope, charity (love), these three; but the greatest of these is charity (love).”

The first fruit of the Spirit (Holy Spirit) is love – it is not faith : Galatians 5:22 – 23 KJV “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

Then what is the most important thing in the Bible? Although from the above quotes, you have seen one part of  the answer. Let us search the scriptures for the most important thing in the Bible – John 5:39 KJV “Search the scriptures…”  Let us study the word of truth to know and understand the most important in the Bible –  2 Timothy 2:15 KJV “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”

Mark 12:29-31 KJV

“And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”

Let us read another scripture in order to have a better understanding of the most important thing in the Bible:

Matthew 22:35-40  “Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Both the scriptures Mark 12:29-31 and Matthew 22:35-40 are saying the same thing: the most important thing in the Bible.

Let us look at Mark 12:29-31. The first of all the commandments is the same with the first and great commandment in Matthew 22:35-40. The first and great commandment means the most important thing in the Bible.

The most important thing in the Bible can divided into three (3):

(1) The Lord our God is one Lord. This means that God is one.  This is the oneness of God.

(2) Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This means a determined personal walk and strong intimate relationship with God. This is having great love for God. It talks about love but for God only – very close relationship with God.

(3) Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. This means love in two dimensions: (i) Love yourself first  but not the selfish love (Ii) Love your neighbor exactly the way you love yourself!

(1) GOD IS ONE (the oneness of God)

The most important thing in Christianity to know and understand is that God is one (the oneness of God). Let us read 1 Timothy 2:5  KJV “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

1 Timothy 2:5  KJV says God is one God , that is, God is one,

But someone may ask : What of Jesus Christ, the only one mediator between God and men – is He not God?

Yes, Jesus Christ is God. Does it make God now two? No. Still, God is one!

How?

God is one with three (3) parts – God the Father, God the Son (the Lord Jesus Christ) and God the Holly Spirit!!! This is Holy Trinity or simply put “TRINITY”.

This is the most important thing in the Bible to know and understand by every Christian in the Kingdom of God that God is one – and this one God is with three (3) parts, that is, Trinity. God is one but this one can be subdivided into three (3) parts. This is a mystery!

Let us search the scriptures to have the deep understanding of TRINITY.

TRINITY

Let us read Matthew 28:19 KJV ”Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”Look at this scripture (Matthew 28:19) carefully, you will see “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”

In Matthew 28:19 KJV, note this word “name” (singular) not names (plural)  – “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”  Just one name for the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost!

Also take note of this phrase in Matthew 28:19 KJV “the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” This is talking about the Trinity – (1) God the Father, (2) God the Son (Jesus Christ) and (3) God the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost means the Holy Spirit. God is one with three (3) parts!!!

It is the most important thing in the Bible to know and understand that God is one with three (3) parts – TRINITY. Trinity is the oneness of God.

Let us look at another scripture to show you that God is one but with three parts just exactly like a boiled egg with three part (a shell, an egg white and an egg yolk): 1 John 5:7 KJV  “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” The word “the word” mentioned here is Jesus Christ. You can now scripturally see for yourself that these three (God the Father. God the Son/Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit) are one.

It is a mystery that God can divided/separated Himself into three (3) parts. God the Father in Heaven, God the Son the Lord Jesus Christ on earth during His earthly ministry as the Son of man, and the Spirit of God as the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost moving between Heaven and earth. The Spirit of God, that is, the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost is permanently here right now on earth until rapture. The Spirit of God, that is, the Holy Spirit/Holy Ghost came down to dwell permanently  in the life of any genuinely born again Christian after the ascension of Jesus Christ back to Heaven sitting down at the right hand of the God the Father in Heaven.

The word “the word” mentioned in the above quote  (1 John 5:7 KJV) is Jesus Christ –  read John 1:1, 14 KJV “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

Read further Revelation 19:13 KJV”And he (Jesus Christ) is was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”

Let us look at another scripture to convince you beyond a reasonable doubt that God is one with three (3) parts –  it is what we always say at the end of every church service: may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and fellowship/communion of the Holy Spirit be with us now and forever –  2 Corinthians 13:14 KJV “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.” Here again and again! You can see clearly the Trinity (God the Father. God the Son/Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit) in action – the oneness of God by Trinity!

This is the most important thing in the Bible for every Christian to know and understand that God is one with three parts (the Trinity). The oneness of God in the kingdom of God is the most important thing in the Bible for every Christian to know and understand.

Let us look at another scripture that even in the beginning of the Bible (Genesis), the Trinity (God the Father. God the Son/Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit) involved at creation: Genesis 1:1-3  “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”

From the above quote, in Genesis 1:1, God is mentioned; Genesis 1:2, the Spirit of God , that is, the Holly Spirit is mentioned and Genesis 1:3 says “And God said” meaning “the spoken word of God”. This “the spoken word of God” is Jesus Christ because Jesus Christ is the word of God as we read in 1 John 5:7 KJV  “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

When God wanted to create man, the Trinity was involved in Genesis 1:26 KJV  “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness….” Look at these 2 words in this Genesis 1:26: ” US”, and “OUR” – all these 2 words are plural ( not singular) referring to the Trinity – (God the Father. God the Son/Jesus Christ, and God the Holy Spirit).

JESUS CHRIST IS GOD

It is the most important thing to know and understand in Christianity that Jesus Christ is God. He is One with God – John 10:30 KJV  “I (Jesus Christ) and my Father (God) are one.” Yes! God is one with three (3) parts.

Jesus Christ is God (God the Son). He is God – ONE with God the Father. How?

One of the names of Jesus Christ is EMMANUEL – Matthew 1:23 KJV “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”

From this quote (Matthew 1:23), the interpretation of “Emmanuel” is “God with us”. That is, Jesus Christ is God. He is God that is with us, God is one by Him (Jesus Christ).

Jesus Christ is God – read John 20:28 KJV “And Thomas answered and said unto him (Jesus Christ), My Lord and my God.’ Thomas called Jesus Christ God in this scripture (John 20:28) after His resurrection, And Jesus Christ did not rebuke him (Thomas)  for calling Him God. Therefore, Jesus Christ is God. God is one by Jesus Christ.

To prove beyond the reasonable doubt that Jesus Christ is God – and God is one. Read
Philippians 2:6 KJV “Who ( Jesus Christ), being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:” Jesus Christ is the form of God, that is, God the Son . The meaning of the expression “thought it not robbery to be equal with God:” is there is God the Father while He Himself (Jesus Christ) is the God the Son.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD

It is the most important thing in Christianity to know and understand that the Holy Spirit is God.

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Holy Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and is Almighty God. And God is one.

The Holy Spirit is God and God is one –  Acts 5:3-4  KJV “…. to the Holy Ghost,… unto God.”  Acts 5:3-4 revealed to us that the Holy Spirit is God.

(2)  DETERMINED LOVE FOR GOD

It is the most important thing in the Bible to love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and with all your strength; to have determined love for God.

The Lord Jesus Christ says “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength”. How?

You .must know and understand how much God loves you which is beyond understanding – depth of love God has for us is beyond comprehension!  –  Ephesians 3:19 KJV “And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”

For you to love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength, you must have the understanding of the reason why you are called a child of God – for God to call you His son or daughter: 1 John 3:1 KJV “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”

To love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength, you must know and understand that God first loved you –  1 John 4:19  KJV “We love him, because he (God) first loved us.”

To love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength, you must know and understand that God Himself is love – 1 John 4:8, 16 KJV “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” This scripture says GOD IS LOVE in both the verses 8 and 16.

The depth and manner of love that God has for us is everlasting which is too difficult to fathom – Jeremiah 31:3 KJV  “The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” This kind of everlasting love is only for the genuinely born again Christians because God is angry with the sinner/wicked every day –  Psalms 7:11  KJV “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.” The word “wicked” in this scripture means “sinner”.

The love of God is great, enormous, passed beyond understanding that God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to die for the sin of the world – John 3:16 KJV “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

We cannot love Him enough compared with the way He loves us.

(3) THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF

It is the most important thing in the Bible to love your neighbor as yourself.

The Lord Jesus Christ says “Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” This means love in two dimensions: (i) Love yourself first but not the selfish love (Ii) Love your neighbor exactly the way you love yourself!

You cannot give what you don’t have. This is the reason why the Lord Jesus Christ said you must have to love yourself first ( not the selfish love).

One important reason is that nobody has ever seen God physically face to face but through practical expression and practical demonstration of love through you as the channel or vessel of love , everybody/people will see and experience God because God is love – 1 John 4:12  KJV “No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.”

It is the most important thing in the Bible to love your neighbor exactly the way you love yourself because nobody in the natural/normal sense hates himself/herself just the way the Christian husband is commanded to love his wife –  Ephesians 5:28-29  “So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:”

The kind of love the Jesus Christ is talking about is divine and general.  Divine means it is of God. General in the sense that your neighbor need NOT to be a Christian before you love him/her. He or she can even be a Muslim or from any other religions, even your neighbor may be an atheist! By showing and demonstrating practical love to them (your neighbor) , they will see God through you.

It is the most important thing in the Bible to love your enemy because your enemy can be your neighbor! – Matthew 5:43-46  KJV “Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I (Jesus Christ) say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

Know and understand that your enemy/enemies cannot do you any evil in the process of you obeying God to practically show and demonstrate the love of God towards them because of the presence of God with always –  Psalms 23:5  KJV “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies….’

Don’t waste your time to pray for your enemies to fall down and die. All you need to do is just obey the word of God by loving them. That showing/ demonstration of practical love will make them to see God through you – Read the below scriptures on what to do and how to show practical love for your enemies who might be your neighbor:

(I) Proverbs 25:21- 22 KJV  “If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink. For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.” Note that God will surely reward your obedience to His word by showing and demonstrating practical love for your enemies who might be your neighbor. God wants to win their souls because He has no pleasure in the daeth of sinner –  Ezekiel 33:11 KJV  “Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?” The word “wicked” means “sinner”

(Ii) Romans 12:19-21 KJV “Dearly beloved ( the genuinely born again), avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

You are not even permitted to curse those who curse you but to bless in order to practically show and demonstrate the love of God through you –  Read the scriptures below:

(I) Matthew 5:44  KJV “But I (Jesus Christ) say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;”

(2) Romans 12:14 KJV “Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.”

(3) Ephesians 4:29 KJV “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

Whatever you want people do to you, do it to them – Matthew 7:12 KJV “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”

What about the royal law that is expected of every Christian to obey and do:

James 2:8  “If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well.”

If God bless you financially and materially, as a true Christian believer and dearly beloved of a child of God, share with the poor and the needy, by this practical expression and practical demonstration of the love of God, people will see God through you and the Name of God shall be glorified – 1 John 3:16-17  KJV “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?”

This kind of the love of God is lacking in the church today!

It was not so in the Early Church because every member of the church is reached out to the extent that no one is lacking – people see God through this excellent gesture in the Early Church –
Acts 2:44-45 KJV and  And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need….Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.”

There are many lacking today in the abundance of riches and wealth in the church! Why? The pastors are not teaching and practicing the church the most important thing in the Bible.

And this is what the Lord Jesus Christ will base the judgment upon on the Day of judgment – please read the whole scripture (Matthew 25: 32 -46 ) below – it the whole summary of the love of God and the practice of true Christianity on earth:

Matthew 25:31-46  KJV “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.”

In Christianity, there are some brethren who are hungry, thirsty, homeless (stranger), naked, sick, and in prison ang they have a strong relationship with God by love for Him which is the most important thing in the Christian life of a genuine believer. Therefore it is the most important thing in the Bible, the things the Lord Jesus Christ said in the above scripture (Matthew 25: 31 – 46).
