TITHE PAYMENT: The Absolute Truth And Correct Teaching Your Pastor Will Never Tell And Teach You About Tithing?
Just believe exactly what the Bible says about tithing.
Do you know the right principles and correct application of tithing in the Bible?
What is the correct Bible teaching on tithing?
The word “tithing” appears just once (1) time in one (1) verse in the Bible (KJV).
The word “tithe” appears 14 times in 13 verses in the Bible (KJV).
The word “tithes” appears 24 times in 21 verses in the Bible (KJV).
Tithe payment is part of giving in the Bible. What did the Lord Jesus Christ say about giving and how it is applied to the tithe payment?
Correct tithing under the Law, no church today has applied and practiced it as it is written in the Law of Moses! Tithe is according to the law in the Bible – Hebrews 7:5 KJV “….take tithes of the people according to the law…”
Tithe is giving of ten percent (10%) of increase of anything. It is not ten percent of all your income plus capital because many pastors preach and teach incorrectly that it has to be ten percent of all your income plus capital. It is just ten percent of your income.
Income is money that is earned from doing work or received from investments. For a company or business, income is a company’s profit or business profit in a particular period of time:
To explain it in simplest form, tithe is just exactly like tax people pay to the government. It is 10% (ten percent) or one-tenth of your income.
The first Saint to pay tithe in the Bible was Abraham in Genesis 14:20 KJV “And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he (Abraham) gave him (Melchizedek king of Salem) tithes of all.” Know and understand that God never instructed Abraham to pay this tithe! He (Abraham) copied it from the practice of the pagans.
Many Christians thought that tithe or tithing came first from God because it is in the Law of Moses but the tithe payment or system of tithing started with pagans before God called Abraham according to the research. The pagans gave ten percent(10%) tithe to their false gods. From the circular account, pagans set up the system of tithing before God called Abraham out of his family of Idol worshippers. God allowed it for Abraham because He (God) will always start from where He meets someone – from what you know as the time of ignorance God overlooks – Acts 17:30 KJV “And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent.”
Let us look at the correct teaching about tithing in the Bible.
Tithe is in the Law of Moses as the book of Hebrews gave the account of tithing under the Law of Moses in the Old Testament – Hebrews 7:5 KJV “And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:” This book of Hebrews only gives the account of tithe payment by the people of Israel in the Old Testament in order to appreciate what the Lord Jesus did for us (the New Testament Christian Believers) on the Cross of Calvary as Moses represents law while the Lord Jesus Christ represents grace and truth – John 1:17 KJV “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” The Lord Jesus is the end of the Law of Moses for every genuinely born again Christian – Romans 10:4 KJV “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.”
Every true Christian takes the righteousness of Christ Jesus as God imputes the righteousness of Christ upon us – God made us the righteousness of Christ because after the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, all the laws were fulfilled in Him (Jesus Christ) for us – 2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV and Matthew 5:17 KJV) “For he (God) hath made him (Jesus Christ) to be sin for us (every genuinely born again Christian), who (Jesus Christ) knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him….Think not that I (Jesus Christ) am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”
The Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled all the laws of Old Testament – the Law of Moses – and this reason why on the mount of transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared to Him (Jesus Christ). Moses represents the Law and Elijah represents the prophets – and this fulfillment of the Law of Moses in Christ Jesus was confirmed by God on the mount of transfiguration in Matthew 17:1,2,3,5 KJV “….Jesus…. transfigured…. behold, there appeared…Moses and Elias (Elijah) talking with him (Jesus Christ)…. behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I (God) am well pleased; hear ye him (Jesus Christ).”
Under the Law of Moses, it was a commandment by God that people of Israel should pay tithes in the Old Testament – Hebrews 7:5 KJV “And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:” Once again, from this Scripture, it (tithe payment) was according to the Law but in the New Testament, after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are under the grace – we are no longer under the Law; the Law of Moses had been terminated! Praise the Lord!! Hallelujah!!!
Almost all the churches, most especially all the Pentecostal churches preach and teach about tithing/tithe but incorrectly. They say you must have to tithe all your income, that is, all the money you make. But is this what the Bible says? Capital No! The word of God (the Holy Bible) never mentioned money unless redeemed with very strict/difficult conditions.
What the Bible simply mentioned as tithe is not money but purely agricultural produce because the Jewish people in Israel in the Old Testament were of the Agricultural society. Tithe is never money. Let us skillfully search the scriptures for the truth of what exactly the Bible says about tithing:
(1) Leviticus 27:30 KJV “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD.” Note here in this Scripture, the word of God mentioned two (2) things (i) the seed of the land and (ii) the fruit of the tree – crops. Money is never mentioned. When they tithe, they tithed the seed and the fruit – crops. They tithed the crops – money is not there! No church, most especially in the Pentecostal churches takes sack(s) or basket(s) of Agricultural produce as tithe but this is what exactly tithe was in the Old Testament if we were to correctly practice tithing in the New Testament.
(2) Deuteronomy 14:22-23 KJV “Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.” Note here in this Scripture, the word of God mentioned: corn, wine, oil, firstborn of the herds and flocks – money is never mentioned here but to tithe only the Agricultural produce.
(3) 2 Chronicles 31:5 KJV “And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly.” Note in this Scripture, apart from corn, wine, oil being mentioned, honey is also included. That is, corn, wine, oil and honey were tithed in the Old Testament. It was never money at all!
(4) Leviticus 27:32 KJV “And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.” Note also here in this Scripture, the word of God mentioned that cattle (cows) or goats/sheep – livestock should be tithed. The tithe of the herd or of the flock is talking about tithing cattle (cows) or goats/sheep – livestock. It is never money.
From the four (4) Scriptures quoted above, tithe comes from the following Agricultural produce: seed, fruit, crops, corn, wine, oil, honey, firstborn of the herds and flocks, cattle (cows) or goats, sheep – livestock. All these are Agricultural produce that the children of Israel tithe in the Old Testament – it is never money.
Many pastors incorrectly preach and teach that you have to pay tithes every week or every month but according to the Bible, it is mentioned categorically, clearly that the tithe payment should be once in a year – Deuteronomy 14:22 KJV “Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.”
All the tithes of the above came to the priests – the priests received all the tithes in the Old Testament according to the account of the book of Hebrews chapter seven verses 5 to 9 – Hebrews 7:5-9 KJV “And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth. And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.” All the priests are Levites but not all the Levites are priests – and all the Levites received the tithes in the Old Testament. This is type of tithe is called “The Holy/ Levitical or Sacred Tithe”.
All the tithes were given to the priests but in the church today in the New Testament, after the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we don’t have priests in the church but pastors. So if we were to correctjy practice tithing of the Law of Moses in the Old Testament in this church age, all the tithes should be given to the priests/Levites in Israel where we have them. Some pastors preach and teach “REPLACEMENT THEORY” which is not biblical that all the Christians are spiritual Jews. But we have today scripturally, Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians – there is nothing like all the Christians are the spiritual Jews in the Bible. Some pastors are having, preaching and teaching their own doctrine(s) completely different from the Bible and forcing it/them on their church members. They say the church replaced Israel. This is a complete wrong doctrine. If we force the practice of the Law of Moses into the church today, we will have problems. In the church age today, we don’t have Levitical Priests but Pastors. They are forcing people to put them under the Law instead of under the grace.
They are twisting and manipulating the Scriptures to take their church members back to the Law and practice of the Old Testament in this church age! They are despising the finished works of our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary. And indirectly they are denying their church members to appreciate the amazing finished works at Cross of Calvary by our Lord Jesus Christ.
WHEN DID THEY GIVE THE TITHE
(1) Every single year:
Now let move further and deeper, earlier in the above, it has been established scripturally that the tithe payment is yearly, that is, every single year (every year – year by year).
(2); Every third (3rd) year:
But there is another different time for the payment of tithe – Deuteronomy 26:12 KJV “When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithes of thine increase the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be filled.” So there is a time, every third (3rd) year, you give tithe if you are correctly practicing the tithing of the Old Testament under the Law of Moses. But this tithe must go to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow. This type of tithe is called “The Poor Tithe”.
Remember that every single year, all the tithes must go to the priests.
But every third (3rd) year, the tithe must go to the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow. This is every three years, all the tithes must go to poor people.
That is God made the provision for the poor through tithe/tithing to take care of them. This means that the church members can decide to give their tithe to the poor Christians – the poor and the needy in the church if the church today is to properly practice tithing as we have seen in the Deuteronomy 26:12 KJV. This time, tithe goes to the poor people. It means that generally not all the tithes go to the Levitical Priests but some go to the poor people in every third (3rd) year!
TIME OF EXTRA ADDITIONAL TWENTY PERCENT (20% ) TO THE TEN (10%) TO MAKE THIRTY PERCENT (30%) OF TITHE PAYMENT
There are times when extra additional twenty percent (20%) to make thirty percent (30%) of tithe payment must be done. This is the time when the tithe is redeemed (you buy back) – and you pay the tithe in cash (money). This is the time, you must add extra twenty percent (20%) to the ten percent (10%) on top – and these two will sum up to thirty percent (30%) of tithe payment because you redeem it to pay it in cash. I have never seen any church practicing this! But it is in the Law of Moses under the Old Testament in the Bible if we are to practice tithing correctly according to the word of God (the Holy Bible) – Leviticus 27:13,31 KJV “But if he will at all redeem it, then he shall add a fifth part (20%) thereof unto thy estimation…..And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part (20%)!thereof.”
There is a commandment under the Law of Moses in the Old Testament to give ten percent (10%) tithe in form of Agricultural produce but if you were to redeem it (buy back with cash/money), you must have to add extra additional twenty percent (20%) to the ten percent (10%) tithe thereby you will end up paying thirty percent (30%) in cash (money). This is an option of paying in cash (money) instead of the Agricultural produce – you keep your Agricultural produce and you bring cash (money) to the Levitical priests which must be thirty percent (30%)!
Many pastors will never tell you this, but it is in the Bible as far as the practice of tithing is concerned correctly. This is what the payment of tithe with money (cash) is in the Bible. Thank God I am not under the Law but under the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament, the church age today. It was very difficult to practice this tithing because almost everyone will be financially broke. This is very difficult condition to fulfill. Any pastor who teaches and practices this in the church age today under the New Testament will definitely get into trouble but it is in the Bible if we are to practice tithing correctly.
If it is only ten percent (10%) tithe you are teaching for the practice of tithing, then you are not teaching the practice of tithing correctly because the Bible teaches extra additional twenty percent (20%) to be added to the ten percent (10%) to make thirty percent (30%) as result of paying the tithe in cash/with money. This is exactly what the Bible teaches about the true practice of tithing correctly under the Law.
There is another giving in addition to this thirty percent (30%) tithe but this is the trespass offering or sin offering which is also twenty percent (20%) – Leviticus 5:16 KJV “And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part (20%) thereto, and give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him.” What this Scripture is saying is that when you come to the priest to pay your tithe, you must bring along with you twenty percent (20%) on top for trespass (sin or guilt) offering. This takes care of what you have failed to do in regard to the holy things or to make an atonement for the sin you have committed against the holy thing. So if you are to pay everything (tithe and sin offering) in cash/with money, you must have to pay fifty percent (50%). This is very difficult to practice in fulfilling this harsh and tough condition.
There is no way someone will not be broke financially in fulfilling this very difficult condition under the Law of Moses in the Old Testament. Thank God for what the Lord Jesus Christ did for us ( the New Testament Christian believers) that we are not under the Law of Moses but under the grace of Jesus Christ – John 1:17 KJV “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” The Lord Jesus is the end of the Law of Moses for every genuinely born again Christian – Romans 10:4 KJV “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.”
The law is really demanding. Even the Bible says the Law is a curse. If you fail in just one law in the Old Testament under the Law of Moses, you have failed in all! To live under this system of tithing and payment for the sin offering is crazy and terrible! It would be very difficult to survive economically.
THE REASON FOR MALACHI 3: 8 – 10
The above system of tithing and payment for the sin offering is crazy and terrible for the people of Israel under the Law of Moses in the Old Testament.
This is one of the reasons of what led to Malachi 3: 8 -10 where it was very difficult to meet up with this system of tithing and payment for the sin offering – Malachi 3:8 KJV “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.” God was talking to the nation of Israel here – not the New Testament Christian believers: Malachi 3:8-10 KJV “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”
Once again, read and study the content of verse nine (9) to know and have a good understanding that God was talking to the whole nation of Israel – and never the New Testament Christian believers: Malachi 3:9 KJV “Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.” This Scripture says “this whole nation” meaning ” the nation of Israel” Read again, the first part of this Scripture: Malachi 3:9 KJV “Ye are cursed with a curse…” Do not forget that LAW is a curse but the Lord Jesus Christ had redeemed us (every true Christian believer) from the curse of the law – Galatians 3:13 KJV and Colossians 2:14 KJV “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law…..that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.” We are under the grace – we are no longer under the Law; the Law of Moses had been terminated – the curse of the law had been nailed to His Cross (our Lord Jesus Christ’s cross)! Praise the Lord!! Hallelujah!!!
For every church today that is using Malachi 3:8 -10 to preach, teach and collect tithe from the church members, after paying the ten percent (10%) tithe in cash (money), where are the remaining two other things that are mandatory to fulfill in practicing correct tithing in cash/money: (1) extra additional twenty percent (20%) on top in cash (money) as you have redeemed it and (2) also another extra additional twenty percent (20%) for the sin offering on top? Definitely, no church today is correctly practicing the system of tithing and payment for the sin offering as indicated in the Bible under the Law of Moses in the Old Testament.
This means that the church is playing hypocrisy and telling the half-truth in practicing the system of tithing and payment for the sin offering in the church age today under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ of the New Testament. All these things are in the Bible for the true practice of the system of tithing and payment for the sin offering. I think it is very important to preach and teach the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ for us in the New Testament rather than this very difficult system of tithing and payment for the sin offering of the Law of Moses under the Old Testament.
If the church age today is to correctly practice tithing – to collect tithe, it should be thirty percent 30%) as it has been redeemed with cash (money) the way it is exactly instructed in the Bible. It is not the ten percent (10%) that the church is collecting as it not Agricultural produce. This is what the Bible says about tithing under the Law of Moses in the Old Testament.
I am not against the payment of tithe or tithing but I am only teaching what the Bible says correctly about tithing/tithe payment. However I am absolutely against the abuse and wrong use of tithes where the church fails to reach out to and take care of the poor and the needy to the level that no one is lacking in the church.
The practice, known as tithing in Nigeria and Africa at large means poor people are funding the extravagant lifestyles of some of Nigeria’s richest pastors – charismatic preachers in prosperity gospel churches instead of the church using the major part of the tithes for the poor – the widows, orphans, destitute, homeless. In fact, those who are in need, etc. according to Deuteronomy 26:12 and Matthew 25: 34 – 46.
To study in detail for a better and deeper understanding of system of tithing in the Bible, get my book or read for free at Amazon (KDP) titled “Money Never Paid As Tithes In The Bible Unless Redeemed: What My Pastor Has Never Told Me Concerning Money Paid As Tithes” by Olusegun Ibikunle .
