KNOW THE REASON WHY APOSTLE PAUL REPLACED TITHING (TITHES) WITH MINISTRY OF GIVING IN BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE BY GRACE IN ALL HIS EPISTLES
Now let us look at what Apostle Paul said by the Holy Spirit on giving? May be you ask in your mind, why Apostle Paul? The Bible says Apostle Paul was the Apostle to the Gentiles: Romans 11:13 (KJV) “For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office.” Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit wrote almost three-quarter of the New Testament Epistles – there are between thirteen (13) and fourteen (14) epistles of Paul in the New Testament which the Holy Spirit used Apostle Paul to write for the church age. You see change from Jesus to Peter – and from Peter to Paul for the Gentiles (the church age). So now let us find out how to give to God in this dispensation of the church age (the times of the Gentiles).
The first question to ask: is there anywhere in the Epistles of Apostle Paul written to the church by the Holy Spirit where he instructed or commanded the church to give ten percent tithe in this dispensation of the church age? The answer is dogmatic no. Apostle Paul, by the Holy Spirit, never tells us. Did Apostle Paul, by the Holy Spirit, say we should go back to the Old Testament and give ten percent tithe? No, he did not say so. Then, why are most pastors (especially prosperity gospel pastors) say we should always give ten percent tithe in this church age? The Epistles of Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit are for the doctrines of the New Testament for the church age – for us (the genuinely born again) through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. These prosperity gospel pastors cannot claim that they know more than the Holy Spirit. It will become a blasphemy for them to say they have more understanding than the Holy Spirit on tithing under the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ (the church age). And if they preach any other gospel on tithing that removes the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the word of God says let them be accursed: Galatians 1: 6 – 9 (KJV) “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
Then through the Holy Spirit what did Apostle Paul say? Before we look at what Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit does say, let me make it clear that I am not preaching against tithes but I am only teaching on what exactly the Bible says about tithing especially this church age under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. People will soon be bored, upset and tired about preaching on tithing if you preach about it always all the time in the church because the system of tithing in the Old Testament under the law of Moses is not for the church age today. Now, what the Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit does say as regards on how to give in the church age.
The teaching of the Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit makes and gives us the genuinely born again Christians the deep understanding by the revelation knowledge that since we are under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ through His love for us, and also by considering all what the Lord Jesus Christ did for us by His grace through His love which money cannot buy, then we have the grace for the capacity to give more than ten percent or more than thirty percent depending on the level of your understanding based on the love of all what Jesus Christ did for you, when you consider the ten percent tithe or thirty percent tithe if the people of Israel decided to redeem it with the cash /money. If the people of Israel could decide to redeem their tithes with the cash /money by paying thirty percent tithe, then how much more in the church age under the dispensation of grace by our real love for God? The Lord Jesus Christ redeemed you with His blood: Ephesians 1:7 (KJV) ” In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”
If people of Israel in the Old Testament did give up to thirty percent to redeem their Agricultural commodities with cash; and to redeem their sin, they gave additional twenty percent of their offering for the trespass offering, under the grace we can give more than ten percent or thirty percent – no pastor should force you or threaten you with fear on how to give to God; you decide by yourself with the grace of God you have upon your life, how much the measure you want to give – the giving is between you and God alone. The redemption of their Agricultural goods with the cash /money cannot be compared with the redemption we obtained through the precious blood of Jesus Christ for our salvation (the forgiveness of sins). Their system of giving of tithes in the Old Testament under the Law of Moses is a shadow of the New Testament – the New Testament is a substance. We have the grace to give more than the people of Israel who were under the Law of Moses. If God could give us His only begotten son the Lord Jesus Christ to die for our sin – I believe nothing is too much for us to give to God: John 3:16 (KJV) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son….” And when the Lord Jesus Christ returned back to Heaven, God still gave us the very best that money cannot buy, that is, the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:32 (KJV) “…….. the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.”), I believe with this understanding, there is nothing that will be too much for you to give to God to appreciate Him out of genuine love from the bottom of your heart as the Lord Jesus Christ loves us to the end.
Acts 5:32 (KJV) “……..the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.” That poor widow in Luke 21:1-4 gave hundred percent, so you also can give like that if you have the leading of the Holy Spirit or because of the grace of God upon your life – but your giving must not be under compulsion; it must not be with fear; and it must not be under the law of compensation for material and financial success with good health from God in return for your giving. Don’t give because you are expecting miracle money, miracle contract, etc. If you do, be expecting disappointment because God will disappoint you as you don’t give as a result of your genuine love for Him (God.).
Let us see what Apostle Paul does say in his Epistles to the church on how to give to God in this dispensation of the church age: 2 Corinthians 9:6–7 (KJV) “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” From the passage of this Scripture, how much are you to give? You must give according to what you have decided in your heart to offer – that is, you decide what to give – you decide how much you want to give because you are not under the Law of Moses but under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. No pastor should tell you how much you should give; you decide in your mind how much to give. Since you are under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, you can give more than ten percent as a result of your genuine love for God. Wow! Your pastor has never revealed this to you; he has never told you this before!
Furthermore, from the passage of this Scripture, how should you give? You must not give grudgingly, or your giving must not be of necessity. When a pastor tells you that you should give ten percent tithe which is the system of tithing in the Old Testament under the law of Moses, then your giving has become of necessity or you are giving under compulsion which will result in giving grudgingly. Even when you redeem it with the cash /money with twenty percent to add to the already ten percent thereby making it thirty percent which someone must do under the law, then it has become of necessity and some may even give it grudgingly because the pastor is saying you must give as it was in the Law of Moses on tithing. What I am saying is that when the pastor keeps on laying emphasis on the fact that you have to give ten percent tithe all the time and keeps on repeating it, people will end up as well giving their tithes grudgingly – and do you think God will accept that offering with that kind of heart? God will never accept it because He (God) loves a cheerful giver.
By grace, from what you have proposed in your heart, you should give what you want to give cheerfully. This is what we have read and studied in the Bible (2 Corinthians 9:6-7). Under the grace, you have option of what to give to God cheerfully. It is not only money you can give to God, you can also give your time to God cheerfully, you can give your heart to God cheerfully, in fact, you can give all your resources to God cheerfully because the Lord Jesus Christ gave all to you – He (the Lord Jesus Christ ) makes you greater than all the saints of the Old Testament: Luke 7:28 (KJV) “For I (Jesus Christ ) say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” Because of the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ upon your life and the love that God has for you, you can cheerfully give yourself to the ministry that God has given to you. Apart from the cash/money, you can give cheerfully your energy and effort to God because of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ upon your life especially when you look at the cross of Calvary and you see how Jesus Christ gave Himself (His life) to you. And another reason you should give to God cheerfully, even all your resources is because you are giving back to God a token out of all what He has given to you as God is the owner of everything including your life: 1 Chronicles 29:14 (KJV) “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.”
Under the law of Moses in the Old Testament, you have to give ten percent tithe or thirty percent tithe (if you redeem your Agricultural commodities with money) and another additional twenty percent of your offering as trespass offering to God but under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, you are open to the option to decide (choice) of what you want to give to God cheerfully. God had done so much for us under the grace through our Lord Jesus Christ. Under the grace, you always want to give cheerfully to God your resources to appreciate Him; and to demonstrate the genuineness of your love from the bottom of your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ by giving more than ten percent or more than thirty percent as it was written in the Old Testament under the Law of Moses. The Lord Jesus Christ gave His life to us – He gave us everything – He gave us Himself to us! He gave us the Holy Spirit!! Glory to God in the highest (Luke 2:14 KJV)!!! Hallelujah. Thank God that I am under the grace – and NOT under the bondage of the Law of Moses in the Old Testament. Everything you do cheerfully for the Lord Jesus Christ is not because you have Him but it is because you want Him.
Now what should the church giving be used for in church? Let us find out from the Bible:
Let us look at 1 Corinthians 9:14 (KJV) “Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.” Here the preachers of the gospel of Christ should live of the gospel, that is, people should send the preacher support, offerings, money /cash, cheques, but under the law of Moses in the Old Testament, you give ten percent to the Levitical priests. In the New Testament under the grace, we don’t have Levitical priests rather we have pastors so the preachers of the gospel of Christ should live from the church giving (tithes and offerings). It is not a sin for the preachers of the gospel of Christ to live from the tithes and offerings; it is Biblical for the preachers of the gospel of Christ to live of the gospel.
Under the law of Moses in the Old Testament in the Bible, you are cursed by God if you don’t give ten percent tithe of Agricultural commodities or thirty percent tithe if you redeem it with the cash /money to the Levitical priests. But under the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament, whether you give or not, you are not under any curse from God because the perfect and finished work of the Redemption of the Lord Jesus Christ at the cross of Calvary has removed the curse from every true believer once you are genuinely born again for the reason that you are saved by the grace. He (Jesus Christ) redeemed you (if you are genuinely born again) from the curse of the law under the law of Moses: Galatians 3:13 (KJV) “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:”
Let us look at another Scripture to establish this teaching: 1Corinthians 16:1-2 (KJV) ” Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.” From the passage of this Scripture, the Apostle Paul said by the Holy Spirit that you should give as God has prospered you. But under the law of Moses in the Old Testament in the Bible, you must give ten percent tithe or thirty percent tithe if you redeem your Agricultural commodities with money /cash. You can see the difference between the two. Under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament, you give cheerfully as you decide in your mind – you must not give grudgingly or of necessity; you give as you propose in your heart based on the grace of God upon your life – based on the genuineness of your love from the bottom of your heart for God. You give as a result of what Jesus Christ did for you, for loving you to the end: John 13:1 (KJV) “Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he (Jesus Christ) loved them (the true believers) unto the end.”
You give as God has prospered you (1 Corinthians 16:1-2) – may be this week or month, God prospers you to give ten percent, you give it cheerfully; may be the following week or month is very good for you and far better than the previous week or month, God prospers you to give forty percent, you give it cheerfully; may be the week or month after is horrible for you, God prospers you to give ten percent this time around, you give it cheerfully – according to how God has prospered you. Then the next week or month is so good for you and God prospers you much better than the previous week or month, you greatly improve to give forty percent again! Then you give it cheerfully according to how God has prospered you that time.
I want to believe that if the pastors are not forcing the system of tithing of the Old Testament under the law of Moses which must be ten percent tithe on people in this church age, and the people are told the truth about tithing; if the church members are to understand the truth of tithing, definitely people will give more than ten percent under the New Testament. This New Testament is this time of grace of our Lord Jesus Christ (church age), so when they have the revelation knowledge and deep understanding of all what the Lord Jesus Christ did for us at the cross of Calvary by giving Himself (His life) to us as well as His love for us, we have the grace for capacity to give cheerfully to God more than what they gave under the law. The genuinely born again Christians should not be forced into the system of tithing of the Old Testament under the law of Moses in this dispensation of the church age which is the time of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ as we can also see it in 1 Peter 5:2 (KJV) “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind.”
The above passage of 1 Peter 5:2 says not by constraint, but willingly. The problem with tithes today in Nigerian /African Church is by constraint because the pastors go to the wrong dispensation (the Old Testament under the law of Moses) to enforce system of tithing in the Old Testament under the law on the church age which is the time of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament – they want to enslave their church members with the Old Testament system of tithing under the law of Moses in the church age. The pastors in Nigeria and Africa all over constrain the church members into the enslavement of the Old Testament system of tithing in the church age under the dispensation of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ! But the word of God says according to 1 Peter 5:2 that it should not be by constraint. Any pastor who is doing this by constraining his church members into the Old Testament system of tithing in this dispensation of the church age under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ is enslaving his congregation with the Old Testament system of tithing under the law of Moses in the church age – and such a pastor is not preaching the message of grace which is the finished work of the redemption of the Lord Jesus Christ at the cross of Calvary that had delivered us from the Old Testament system of tithing with the curse associated with the law of Moses.
The message of the grace is having the understanding of all what the Lord Jesus Christ had done for me under the covenant of the New Testament through His precious blood shed at the cross of Calvary and now wow! I am going to give according to how God has prospered me – my giving to God shall be cheerfully, not grudgingly, not of necessity, and not by constraint but willingly which must be of a ready mind.
If the truth message of the gospel of Christ (the message of grace) is preached on tithing under the grace, people’s heart would be open to give more to God than the ten percent tithe under the law of Moses in the Old Testament in the Bible. The message of grace is that oh! I look at all what God has done for me through the Lord Jesus Christ and I will give Him cheerfully what He will appreciate, out of what He has given to me, without grudge or of necessity – without being constrained but willingly will I give to God because I am not under the bondage of the law of Moses of the Old Testament in the Bible but under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Under the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, I am allowed to decide how much I will give cheerfully to God; I am open to the option of giving willingly to God; I am not enslaved and constrained to the system of tithing under the Law of Moses of the Old Testament in this dispensation of grace. The message of grace is so wonderful in the dispensation of the church age! If you are still constrained or enslaved to the bondage of giving of ten percent tithe, go ahead the choice is yours but why should I be bound to the law of Moses in the dispensation of grace when the Lord Jesus Christ had made me free and redeemed me from the curse of the law? I have an option of what to give to God cheerfully without being constraint or of necessity. No pastor can force me back to the dispensation of the Law of Moses under the Old Testament. The message of grace; the depth of love of God has made me to give more than ten percent or thirty percent; if possible for me by His grace upon my life, I can give hundred percent like that poor widow. There is a reward for whatever I do for God in Christ Jesus: Galatians 6:7 (KJV) “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
