DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN – Romans 14:17 KJV

Many Christians think that the kingdom of God is the same with the kingdom of Heaven.

Even many church denominations don’t know the difference.

This topic is one of the most important topics in Christianity.  And it is good that every Christian knows and understands the difference in order to rightly divide the word of truth.

There are different dispensations in the Bible.

There is a clear distinction between the kingdom of Heaven and the kingdom of God in the Bible.

The Bible says we should rightly divide the word of truth –  2 Timothy 2:15 KJV  “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Now we shall look at and search the scriptures in order to rightly divide the word of truth for a good knowledge and deep understanding of the difference between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Heaven.

The Kingdom of Heaven is mentioned 33 times in the Bible while the Kingdom of God is mentioned 70 times in the Bible. Why?

The reason is that there is a clear difference between the two of them.

If you look at the whole Bible, firstly, it can be divided two:

  • The Old Testament (under the law of Moses)
  • The New Testament (this started with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ).

Then the New Testament can be divided into:
(1) the gospel of John the Baptist
(2) the gospel of Jesus Christ
(3) the gospel of the apostles in the Early Church / the gospel of the Apostle Peter
(4)  the gospel of the Apostle Paul
(5) the rapture
(6) the Great Tribulation period/ the dispensation of the Jews again
(7) The dispensation of the return of Jesus Christ as the King of the Jews to rule for one thousand year called ” the millennium reign” of Jesus Christ on the earth
(8) the white throne Judgment .

During the dispensation of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ on earth with His 12 disciples/apostles, most of the time, they preached the Kingdom of Heaven to the Jews only.

THE KINGDOM OF GOD

Let us look at the Kingdom of God first.

Concerning this Kingdom of God, the most important scripture that gives us perfect definition of the Kingdom of God is Romans 14:17  KJV “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”

The Kingdom of God is all about righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

This has to do with the spiritual.

The first part of Romans 14:17 says the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, The meat and drink has to do with the physical. Therefore, the interpretation of Romans 14:17 is that the Kingdom of God is not the physical but the spiritual.

The Kingdom of God is not the physical kingdom but the spiritual kingdom.

The Kingdom of God is (1) righteousness (2) peace and (3) Joy of the Holy Spirit.

The Kingdom of God is spiritual kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Let us look at another scripture  – Luke 17:20 – 21  KJV  “And when he (Jesus Christ) was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

The Lord Jesus Christ says in verse 20 that “The kingdom of God cometh not with observation.” These two words “with observation” in the above quoted scripture means physical.

What the Lord Jesus Christ was saying here in Luke 17:20 – 21  KJV  is that the Kingdom of God is not physical but spiritual which is in line with the interpretation of  Romans 14:17 .

What is the meaning of what the Lord Jesus Christ said “behold, the kingdom of God is within you”?

The meaning is that the Kingdom of God is in the heart of man – the heart of the genuinely born again Christian as the Holy Spirit lives inside of them, that is, the in-dwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.

The kingdom of God is the spiritual kingdom inside of every genuinely born again Christian – it is inside of us – and it is spiritual.

Now let us dig deep by looking at John 3:3, 6  KJV  “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God…That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

Here the phrase” born of the flesh is flesh”means physical while the phrase “born of the Spirit is spirit.” means spiritual.

The Lord Jesus Christ said in this John 3:3 “‘Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” The meaning of this is “being born again ‘ is spiritual – it is not physical.

Let us read John 3:5 KJV “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

What is the meaning of “Except a man be born of water”?  The meaning is physical. What the Lord Jesus Christ is saying here is that every human being is born physical into this world by a woman. During the childbirth, firstly there must be breaking of water of the pregnant woman before the child is delivered. That is, during the baby delivery, the pregnant mother must have the breaking of water first before the baby child is born physically into this world. The physical human being is born physically through a pregnant woman into this world by being born of water from their mothers, so every human being is born of water physically from their mothers during the child baby delivery.

What is the meaning of “Except a man be born ….of the Spirit”? The meaning of this is spiritual. It takes the spiritual birth by the Holy Spirit to enter the kingdom of God. Look at letter S of “of the Spirit”, it is capital letter S meaning the Holy Spirit. Since the kingdom of God is spiritual which id of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, therefore the physical human being must be born again by the Holy Spirit. When the physical human being is born again (spiritual birth experience), it is his spirit (inner man) that is born again, that is born of the Spirit (Holy Spirit) – Ephesians 3:16 KJV “That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man.”

It is only the human spirit that is regenerated through the spiritual birth of the Holy Spirit – it is only the human spirit that born again; soul and physical human body are never born again. This is because the kingdom of God is spiritual (not physical).

God is a family Man. So to become a bona fide family member of the kingdom of God, you need to be born again through the spiritual birth experience of the Holy Spirit. How?

You must believe the gospel of salvation given to the apostle Paul by our Lord Jesus Christ – 1 Corinthians 15:1 – 4 KJV “Moreover, brethren, I (Apostle Paul) declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

Once you believe the gospel of salvation of the apostle Paul, you will be sealed with the Holy Spirit – and automatically you shall be a bona fide family member of the kingdom of God on the surface of the earth in this world – Ephesians 1:13 KJV “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”

All the genuinely born Christians worldwide – all the genuinely born again Jewish Christians with all the genuinely born again Gentile Christians are the children of God by the kingdom of God through the seal of the Holy Spirit constitute the kingdom of God on the earth in this world. They the family members of God in the Kingdom of God – Ephesians 3: 14 – 15 KJV “….the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.”

If you read well and study your Bible (KJV) carefully, you will discover that after the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the term “Kingdom of God” is used and mentioned instead of “God of Heaven” in the book of Acts. The book of Acts is the transitional book where the gospel of salvation from the apostle Peter changed and moved to the apostle Paul for the Gentiles.

Because the kingdom of God started after the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself commanded His disciples/apostles to baptize people with the Holy Spirit for them to receive the kingdom of God – Acts 1: 3 – 5 KJV “To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.”

Let us dig deeper, the disciples/apostles after the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ preached the kingdom of God to people –

  • Acts 8:12 KJV “But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.” Here Philip was preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God.
  • Acts 14:22 KJV “Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.” Here the kingdom of God is mentioned.
  • Acts 20:24 – 25 KJV “the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God….And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.” Here Paul the apostle was preaching the kingdom of God to people; the ministry of the kingdom of God he received from our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Acts 28:23 KJV “And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.” Also here, Paul the apostle was preaching and teaching everything concerning the kingdom of God to people
  • Acts 28:31 KJV “Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.” Here Paul the apostle was preaching the kingdom of God to people.

It is in the kingdom of God we have the fruit of the Holy Spirit – and it is a spiritual kingdom where we walk by the spirit and not by sight (physical), we live in the Spirit, we walk in the Spirit – Galatians 5:22 – 25 KJV “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

This kingdom of God is the church age.

What all the Christians must seek first is the kingdom of God – it is never second thing to seek: Matthew 6:33 KJV “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” And this is the ministry the Lord Jesus Christ gave to apostle Paul to preach to the Gentiles, the church age!

But many pastors are preaching and teaching the prosperity gospel first, most especially in Nigeria/Africa. And this is the reason why the practice of true Christianity is very scarce in Nigeria and Christianity failed in Nigeria as of today year 2022! The practice of true Christianity requires the preaching and teaching of the kingdom of God.

THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

The kingdom of Heaven is only for the Jews!!!

During the dispensation of the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ on earth with His 12 disciples/apostles, most of the time, they preached the Kingdom of Heaven to the Jews only: Matthew 10: 5 – 7 KJV “These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into [any] city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.  And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” The Lord Jesus Christ specifically instructed them not to go to the Gentiles and they were to preach the kingdom of heaven (not the kingdom of God) to the Jews.

The earthly ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ is only for the Jews because He had not died for the sins of the world by then and the Law of Moses was still fully in operation during His earthly ministry – Matthew 15:24 KJV “But he (Jesus Christ) answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

This is the clear distinction (difference) between the kingdom of God and kingdom of Heaven.
